A conversation with Dr. Jenny Chan on Internships and Labor in China
In this webinar Dr. Jenny Chan from Hong Kong Polytechnic University will talk with CCWT Director Matthew Hora about her newly published book, Dying for an iPhone (2020; Haymarket Books), and its key findings regarding the status of high school and college internships in China and how they involve the production of Apple’s popular devices including iPhones and iPads. Dr. Chan will also speak about the state of the labor market in China since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and her new research on express delivery workers in China.

Founding Director Dr. Matthew T. Hora is an Assistant Professor of Adult and Higher Education in the Department of Liberal Arts and Applied Studies at UW–Madison, and a research scientist at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.
Dr. Jenny Chan
Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Also a recipient of Early Career Scheme funding awarded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (2018-2022). She also serves as the vice president of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Labor Movements (2018-2022). Dying for an iPhone: Apple, Foxconn and the Lives of China’s Workers is her first co-authored book with Mark Selden and Pun Ngai (Haymarket Books & Pluto Press, forthcoming in 2020).
