Lake Talks: What cartoon zebra mussels taught me about invasive species communication
Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Lake Talks" are free, informal science talks open to all. The speaker for this event is Tim Campbell, an aquatic invasive species (AIS) outreach specialist.

There are a number of approaches people take when communicating about invasive species depending on who is communicating and what they're trying to accomplish. Sometimes invasions are likened to war efforts or a nonnative species is presented at a frightening outsider in order to spur action. Others might try to use a neutral, just-the-facts type of presentation to communicate impacts.

There are reasons people communicate in these ways, and moral, ethical and practical arguments for each approach. Join us for a discussion about what research says about the use of metaphor in invasive species communication, and what some recent research from Wisconsin Sea Grant, the UW-Madison Division of Extension and the UW-Madison Department of Life Sciences Communication suggests about how these varying approaches impact the actions people take.

This event will be one hour, with time for audience Q&A.
